Protests against 'Islamisation', counter rallies held in Germany

  • Rallies by a group protesting what it calls the “Islamisation of Europe” and counter rallies against the group were held in several towns and cities in Germany.

The Patriotic Europeans against the Islamisation of the West (Pegida) has held several rallies in the past few months. On Monday, an estimated 18,000 people participated in one such rally in Dresden, a new high.

But accusing the group of supporting “extremists”, several counter protests were held in places such as Berlin, Dresden, Cologne and Stuttgart.

Most mainstream German political parties have strongly criticized Pegida.
