Protest in Nicaragua over canal project
December 11 , 2014
Thousands of Nicaraguans took to the streets of Managua in protest against plans to build a canal that would link the Pacific and Atlantic oceans.
The protesters in Nicaragua’s capital city said their lands were being taken away for the $50 billion project to build a 278km waterway.
Work, which is due to start in December, is expected to take five years to complete.
A majority of the protesters, who raised anti-government slogans, are villagers living along the planned route of the canal.
