Powerful Earthquake Strikes Italy near Amatrice, Rome Metro Evacuated

  • A strong earthquake hit the heart of Italy, near Amatrice on Wednesday, following which the metro and schools in Rome have been evacuated. Initially, the earthquake with 5.3 magnitude struck central Italy 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) west-northwest of Amatrice.

    The epicenter of the quake was 90 kilometers northeast of Rome and its tremors were felt strongly in the capital. The quake struck at 10:25 am, which was followed by six aftershocks in the same area.

    There are no reports of casualties or damage, but according to the firefighters, their initial assessment was hampered because of the heavy snow blocking roads.
