Power being restored in northern India after major cut
July 31 , 2012
Power is being restored across northern India after a massive cut caused major disruption, including in the capital New Delhi.
More than 300 million people in Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan states were affected.
Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said most of the supply had been restored and the rest was being reinstated.
It is unclear why the supply was cut but some states have been reported to have been using more power than authorized.
The power cut occurred at 02:30 local time on Monday, affecting nearly 30 percent of the country’s 1.3 billion strong population.
Officials said restoring services to hospitals and transport systems remained a top priority.
