The patient appeared to have had an "acute intestinal obstruction" but it turns out the symptoms were a result of what he had eaten.
Doctors in India found out that the 63-year-old businessman had consumed a pound of gold by swallowing 12 small gold bars in Singapore in order to smuggle them to India. He went to see a doctor when laxatives failed to budge the vars in his small intestine.
"This is the first time I have recovered gold from the stomach of a patient," the surgeon said. "It was a tedious three-hour-long operation. He is an old patient and we had to be careful. We found 12 gold bars lying in a stack in his stomach." The gold was worth nearly $20k.
