Portugal: Government's austerity measures face poll challenge
October 4 , 2015
Voters in Portugal are casting their ballot in a parliamentary poll that is being seen as a referendum on President Anibal Cavaco’s austerity policies including spending cuts and market reforms.
The ruling centre-right coalition has promised to continue austerity measures that have been in place for four years.
Socialists and left-leaning parties are critical of the cuts. Cavaco is being challenged by the Socialist leader Antonio Costa. However, opinion polls indicate that a large number of voters are still undecided.
