Pope visits Lesbos to analyse migrant crisis
April 16 , 2016
Pope Francis will visit the Greek island of Lesbos to see for himself the extent of the refugee crisis. Migrants that are to be deported to Turkey in line with the EU-Turkey deal will be kept on this island. Approximately 4000 migrants are currently stranded on the island. Whether they will be allowed to live in Greece or will be deported to Turkey will be decided thereafter. Human right groups regard it as open prison for the migrants who are desperately trying to avoid being sent back to Turkey. All deportations to Turkey have been stopped in the run-up to the pope’s visit, however according to sources the process will resume within a week.
