Phone data collection by NSA illegal, rules US appeals court

  • The National Security Agency’s bulk collection of phone data is illegal, according to a ruling by a US appeals court.

Overturning an earlier ruling, the court did not order the program to be halted, but asked Congress to act in the matter.

According to the NSA, it did not collect data about the content of conversations. The US agency has also been accused of spying on European firms and German leader Angela Merkel.
