Pegida rally: Prominent Germans condemn 'xenophobia'
January 7 , 2015
Fifty prominent Germans have signed an open letter condemning what they call rising xenophobia in the country, according to media reports.
The move comes after large rallies were held by supporters of the Pegida, a far-right group, to protest Muslim immigration.
The letter, whose signatories, included ex-chancellor Helmut Schmidt and former soccer captain Oliver Bierhoff, was published in Bild, the country’s largest selling newspaper.
Several counter rallies against the Pegida protests have also been held.
