Pakistani soldier in Kashmir reportedly killed by Indian troops
January 11 , 2013
A Pakistani soldier was killed by Indian troops on Thursday in the disputed region of Kashmir.
According to Pakistan’s military, the soldier was killed by Indian firing across the Line of Control (LoC).
The incident is the third to occur in five days following the deaths of two Indian soldiers on Tuesday and a Pakistani soldier on Sunday.
Both the Pakistani and Indian governments have set out to ease tensions in what is being seen as the worst crisis in relations since the Mumbai attacks of 2008.
On Wednesday, Indian External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid said: "We cannot and must not allow escalation of this very unwholesome event that has taken place."
The following day, his Pakistani counterpart, Hina Rabbani Khar, welcomed his comments, stating: "There was, I believe, a sense of trying to de-escalate on their side... and I think that is the right way to go."
Exchanges in Kashmir often occur but rarely result in fatalities.
There has been a ceasefire in the region since late 2003.
