Pakistan lawmakers elect former minister Ashraf as PM

  • Pakistan's parliament has elected former water and power minister Raja Pervez Ashraf as the new prime minister, three days after the Supreme Court disqualified the incumbent.

Yusuf Raza Gilani was ruled ineligible after failing to act on corruption charges against President Asif Ali Zardari.

The charges against Zardari date back to the 1990s when his late wife Benazir Bhutto was prime minister. The couple was accused of using Swiss bank accounts to launder bribe money.

Ashraf is likely face the same pressure as Gilani from Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry, who has gained notoriety for taking on the country’s top politicians, to reopen the old corruption cases.
