Ozone layer shows signs of thickening
September 11 , 2014
After years of a worrying depletion, the ozone layer has shown first signs of thickening, according to a study by the United Nations.
This shows that a ban in 1987 on gases responsible for damaging the fragile layer is proving effective, experts said. The vital layer is a natural barrier to the deadly ultraviolet rays that cause skin cancer and other ailments.
Another positive news reported by the study is that the ozone hole over Antarctic has stopped getting bigger.
Michel Jarraud, secretary-general of the World Meteorological Organization, described the findings as an important “environmental success story”.
