Oscar Pistorius 'shot Steenkamp in bathroom'

  • South African Olympian and Paralympian Oscar Pistorius shot his girlfriend three times while she was in the bathroom at his home, according to prosecutors on Tuesday.

Details of the case against Pistorius, who is accused of the premeditated murder of Reeva Steenkamp, are being heard at a bail hearing currently underway in Pretoria.

The prosecution is pursuing a charge of premeditated murder against the 26-year-old.

According to prosecutor Gerrie Ne, Pistorius, who is a double-amputee, put on his prostheses and walked seven yards before firing his gun through the bathroom door.

He shot four times and hit Steenkamp three times, he added. The defendant later broke down the bathroom door and carried the victim downstairs, Nel said.

Defence lawyer Barry Roux told the court his client did not know who was behind the door, adding that the prosecution had provided "no evidence of premeditated murder".

The court appearance comes on the same day as Steenkamp’s funeral in Port Elizabeth.

The case has sparked immense interest in South Africa, where Pistorius is seen as a national hero.

Popularly known as "blade runner", Pistorius was born without a fibula in both legs.

He made history at the 2012 London Games when he became the first double-amputee track athlete to compete in the Olympics.
