'One suicide occurs every 40 seconds'

  • One person takes his or her life every 40 seconds, making it a total of 800,000 suicides worldwide every year, a report by the World Health Organization (WHO) has said.

More people were killed in suicides than in conflicts and natural disasters, the report says.

This is the first such comprehensive report by the UN agency, analyzing suicide data from more than 170 countries.

Guyana, North Korea, South Korea, Sri Lanka and Lithuania are the most suicide-prone countries.
