'One in 10 girls sexually abused'

  • Over one in 10 girls are sexually assaulted or raped before they reach the age of 20, a report by the United Nations says.

Children suffer various forms of violence, the report says; for instance, in a single year, 2012, around 95,000 minors, mostly in the Caribbean and Latin America, were murdered.

Anthony Lake, the executive director of UN child agency Unicef, said children faced violence in homes, communities and schools, and across boundaries of geography, age, religion, income group and ethnicity.
