'Oil discovery' rekindles dispute between Guyana, Venezuela
June 9 , 2015
The discovery of a potentially oil rich zone near the South American coast has renewed a dispute between Guyana and neighboring Venezuela.
Following Venezuela’s decree that extends its territorial claims in the Atlantic Ocean, Guyana has hit out, with its foreign affairs ministry alleging that Venezuela’s move posed a “threat to regional peace and security.”
Guyana described the decree as a “flagrant violation” of international law, and warned that it would “vigorously” resist Venezuelan attempts to enforce such claims.
