Obama urges Israeli and Palestinian leaders to 'tamp down rhetoric'

  • US president Barack Obama has expressed concern over the escalating violence in Israel and Palestinian territories and urged leaders from both sides to “tamp down rhetoric that may feed violence or anger or misunderstanding”.

Obama said the US was “very concerned” about the outbreak of violence, and condemned “violence directed against innocent people”. He said Israel had a right to “protect its citizens from knife attacks” and street violence.

The torching of Joseph’s Tomb, a holy Jewish site, has further increased tensions.
