Obama: U.S. has seen evidence of Syria chemical weapons use
May 17 , 2013
President Barack Obama said on Thursday that the United States has seen evidence of chemical weapons being used in Syria.
Obama made the comments after a meeting with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who has previously claimed he had evidence of chemical attacks.
However, Obama maintained more specific details were needed over the alleged assaults.
The Syrian government has repeatedly dismissed reports over the use of chemical weapons, which are illegal under international law.
Accusations over chemical attacks were made against the government following incidents across the country in March and earlier this month.
The United States has in the past stated that the use of chemical weapons could lead to a possible intervention.
According to United Nations estimates, nearly 80,000 people have lost their lives during the two-year conflict in Syria.
