Obama nominates Carter as new defense secretary

  • President Obama has nominated Ashton Carter as the new defense secretary.

Carter, a former Pentagon official and an assistant secretary of defense in the Clinton administration, replaces Chuck Hagel, the outgoing defense chief.

His appointment has to be approved by the Senate.

Obama said the US faced “no shortage” of security challenges and Carter would be “critical to all these efforts”.

Carter described his nomination as an “honor and a privilege”, and said his military and strategic advice to Obama would be “most candid”.
