Obama given record September fundraising boost
October 7 , 2012
A record $181 million was raised in September for U.S. President Barack Obama's re-election bid.
"This is by far our biggest month yet," said campaign manager Jim Messina in an email to supporters.
No September figures for Obama's Republican opponent Mitt Romney are available yet.
Obama narrowly beat Romney in the August fundraising totals.
The figures come as a boost for Obama following his lackluster performance in the first presidential debate on Wednesday.
September's total of $181 million in donations came from 1.8 million Americans, more than a third of whom were donating for the first time.
In August, Obama and his Democratic party raised more than $114 million, just ahead of $111 million raised by the Romney campaign.
