Obama arrives in Senegal as part of Africa tour

  • US President Barack Obama arrived in Senegal on Thursday as part of the first leg of his African tour.

Obama met with President Macky Sall and later said at a news conference that Senegal, a mainly Muslim country and one of the more stable countries in Africa, was one of America's "strongest partners" in the continent.

Obama along with his wife Michelle and children, also traveled by ferry to Goree Island to visit a memorial to Africans who were involved in the Atlantic slave trade.

This is Obama's third visit to Africa since he became president in 2008.

He is also due to travel to South Africa and Tanzania.
