Nouri al-Maliki loses support as political crisis in Iraq deepens
August 12 , 2014
A coalition of Shia parties in Iraq has nominated Haider al-Abadi as a replacement for Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki as the political crisis in the country deepens amid sweeping gains made by Sunni militants, who have seized considerably territory in the north.
Though a defiant, Maliki is clinging to his post, it’s unlikely that he will be able to hold on for long since Iraq’s President Fouad Massoum has approved Abadi’s name for the PM’s post.
Barack Obama, the US president, described the new Iraqi leadership as a “promising step forward.”
