April 7 , 2017
As per reports, Norway is going to build world's first tunnel for ship, which will cost $315 million.
The 118-feet-wide Stad Ship Tunnel will be built through a piece of rocky peninsula. According to project manager Terje Andreassen, an estimated 8m tonnes of rock need to be blasted in order to build it.
Cruise and freight ships weighing up to 16,000 tonnes are expected to be accommodated by the tunnel. The construction of the tunnel may start in 2019 and it is likely to open in 2023.
Norway’s transport minister, Ketil Solvik-Olsen reportedly mentioned that such plans were floating over the years but now a project with funds is ready.
The location of the tunnel will be at the narrowest point of the Stadlandet peninsula.
