December 20 , 2015
At least one person was killed and nine injured after an avalanche hit the Arctic archipelago of Svalbard in Norway.
Huge quantities of snow and ice tumbled down into Longyearbyen town following a storm, damaging homes and overturning cars.
Rescue work had to be carried out in near-total darkness as the area does not receive direct sunlight in the winter months.
A resident said to be in his forties died. Of those injured three are in serious condition, reports said.
