North Cyprus: Mustafa Akinci wins presidential poll

  • Mustafa Akinci has been elected as the new president of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus after winning more than 60% of the vote in the runoff, figures by the election commission reveal.

Akinci, 67, who stood as an independent and is considered to be a moderate, defeated Dervis Eroglu, the incumbent conservative president.

The winning candidate said that he would focus efforts on finding a peace deal that has eluded Cyprus for 40 years.
