June 11 , 2015
British Nobel laureate Tim Hunt has stepped down from his position at the University College London after he made comments during a conference in South Korea that have been slammed as sexist.
The 72-year-old biochemist said that he was in favor of gender-segregated labs and remarked that the “trouble with girls” working in the lab is that you “fall in love with them.”
Hunt, who won the Nobel prize in 2001, was addressing the World Conference of Science Journalists.
