Both India and Pakistan have accused the other of unprovoked firing across the border that has caused the deaths of at least nine civilians, according to media reports.
India said Pakistani forces fired shells across the Kashmir border, killing five civilians. Pakistan claimed four civilians had died on their side of Kashmir.
Though the two estranged neighbors agreed on a ceasefire in 2003, there have been frequent violations.
In September, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Pakistan must create an “appropriate atmosphere” for peace talks between the two countries.
