Nigerian Presidential Election Postponed for a Week, To be Held on February 23

  • Saturday’s national election has been postponed for a week by the Nigerian authorities. The Presidential election will now be held on February 23, 2019. The decision of postponing the election for a week came just hours before the polls were due to open. The opposition Presidential candidate from People’s Democratic Party Atiku Abubakar called it an attempt to “disenfranchise” voters by the incumbent Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari. Independent Electoral Commission’s Chairman Mahmood Yakubu said that the election was postponed solely due to logistical factors. He also denied any political pressure in the concerned decision. Both the presidential candidates have urged their supporters and voters to stay calm.
