Nigeria: Former military ruler Muhammadu Buhari wins presidential poll

  • In a historic triumph, Muhammadu Buhari, the former military ruler of Nigeria, has become the first opposition leader to win the country’s presidential poll.

In a sign that democracy has deepened in Africa’s largest country, Goodluck Jonathan, the incumbent president, called the 72-year-old general over phone to congratulate him.

Though there have been accusations of electoral malpractices, the poll has largely been praised by observers.

In a statement, Buhari’s APC party warned supporters not to target their defeated opponents, and urged them to celebrate in a “calm, sober” manner.
