New Zealand Mosque Terror Attacker Charged with Murder
March 16 , 2019
The 28-year old Australian Brenton Harrison Tarrant (the white supremacist who shot dead 49 people in the worst ever peacetime mass killing in New Zealand on Friday) has been charged with murder by the Christchurch District Court. New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said it was “well planned” and went on to call it a terrorist attack. She also vowed to change the country’s gun laws. Reports say 41 people were killed at the Al Noor mosque (which the convict live streamed at Facebook) and 7 people at Linwood suburb mosque. The visiting Bangladesh cricket team was scheduled to visit the Christchurch mosque but a few minutes delay to reach the site saved all the team members from the shootout. Most world leaders expressed their solidarity with the New Zealanders. However, Australian Senator Fraser Anning sparked outrage after he issued a statement blaming immigration for the New Zealand terror attack. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stressed on the need of working “together globally to counter Islamophobia and eliminate intolerance and violent extremism”.
