Netherlands Queen Beatrix to abdicate for son

  • Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands has announced that she is abdicating in favor of her son, Prince Willem-Alexander. In a pre-recorded address broadcasted on TV, the queen said that she would formally stand down on 30th April, as she has been thinking about this moment for several years and now the moment to lay down her crown has come. Queen Beatrix, who will soon turn 75, has been head of state since 1980 when her mother abdicated. The queen said it was time for the throne to be held by "a new generation".
