Netanyahu's Main Political Rival Benny Gantz Voted in as the New Speaker of Israeli Parliament, Paving Way for Unity Government

  • Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s main political rival, Benny Gantz (leader of centrist Blue and White party), has been voted in as the speaker of Knesset (Israel's parliament) on Thursday, thereby paving the way for forming an emergency unity government. When asked about his decision of forming an emergency government with his chief rival Netanyahu, Gantz said that “these are unusual times and they call for unusual decisions.” Gantz further clarified that he put forward his candidature for the speaker’s position “to exhaust the possibility of forming a national emergency government.” However, this decision seems to have irked other leaders of the Blue and White party such as Yair Lapid and Moshe Ya’alon as they have reportedly requested a “split from the rest of the party”.
