Nelson Mandela celebrates 94th birthday with family
July 19 , 2012
Nelson Mandela celebrated his 94th birthday on Wednesday by spending a "quiet" day with his family at home in the village of Qunu in the Eastern Cape.
The former South African president, fondly referred to by his clan name, Madiba, now only makes rare public appearances.
He spent 27 years in jail for leading an anti-apartheid campaign and became president in 1994.
After leaving prison in 1990, he led the African National Congress party to a landslide victory, marking the first time South Africa's black majority was allowed to vote.
Mandela stood down from his post in 1999 after serving one term, handing over to Thabo Mbeki.
