Myanmar's President Thein Sein embarks on first European visit
February 26 , 2013
Myanmar’s President Thein Sein is set to embark on his first European tour.
Thein Sein will first visit non-EU state Norway followed by trips to Finland, Austria, Belgium and Italy.
He is expected to boost bilateral ties and discuss Myanmar’s reform process and human rights-related issues.
Last year, Thein Sein visited the United States, the first leader of his country to do so in 46 years.
He is expected to return to Myanmar on March 8.
His visit comes following the easing of Western sanctions against Myanmar as a result of the nominally civilian government's series of reforms since the end of military rule in 2011.
These include freeing hundreds of prisoners and introducing press freedom.
The United States, the EU and Australia have already relaxed most sanctions against Myanmar.
