Myanmar declares emergency in violence-hit Kokang region
February 18 , 2015
Myanmar has declared a state of emergency in the Kokang region after deadly clashes between government troops and rebels.
The area is now under the control of the military, with president Thein Sein imposing a three-month martial law.
The latest round of fighting was sparked by the return of exiled rebel chief Phone Kya Shin from China.
An estimated 50 troops and over 25 members of the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army rebel group have been killed in the fighting since February 9, reports said.
