Mubarak Hosni retrial commences with fresh evidence

  • Ousted Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak appeared in a retrial on Saturday with his sons, Gamal and Alaa, and the country's former interior minister, Habib al-Adly. The former president is faced with charges of corruption, and with the responsibility of the deaths of 850 protesters during the Egyptian Revolution of 2011. Hundreds of Egyptian civilians also went missing during the uprising which toppled Mubarak’s regime.

    Prosecution claims that new evidence will be presented. The next hearing date is set for June 8, 2013. Erstwhile President Mubarak arrived in a helicopter fitted with equipment to cope with his medical condition from a military hospital. Over 3,000 security personnel were deployed outside the Cairo court to maintain law and order. 25 armored vehicles surrounded the venue. A number of Mubarak supports were present at the court session. Family members of those killed during the revolution were also present and demanded the execution of the erstwhile president.
