Mission 2020: NASA plans to land rocket on asteroid

  • NASA is planning a mission to land a rocket on an asteroid in 2020, the US space agency has announced.

    The $1.25-billion plan involves a solar-powered spaceship, which will pluck a boulder from the asteroid’s surface, and contribute to better understanding of deep space for a future Mars mission.

    According to the ambitious plan, this boulder will eventually be placed in the moon’s orbit for further investigation.

    The asteroids being considered for the mission include one which is 1,300-foot wide.
