Millions celebrate Lunar New Year in Asia
February 10 , 2013
Millions are celebrating Lunar New Year, also known as Chinese New Year.
Celebrations kicked off in China at midnight with firework displays and family gatherings.
The sighting of the new moon marks the opening of the year of the snake, taking over from the dragon.
The snake has a mixed reputation. It is associated with wisdom, beauty and intelligence but also pride and anger.
Across China, some 200 million people traveled to celebrate with their families in what is viewed as the biggest mass human migration on Earth.
A week of celebrations is set to take place across Asia to mark the start of the new lunar year, the most important holiday across much of the continent.
