Migrant crisis: Myanmar joins rescue mission for first time
May 23 , 2015
Myanmar has reportedly rescued two boats carrying over 200 migrants stranded at sea near the Bangladesh border.
This was the first such rescue operation by Myanmar, which has been accused of not doing enough to help resolve the migrant crisis.
Most of the migrants stranded at sea in the region are Myanmar’s Rohingya Muslims fleeing persecution.
In an online post, the information ministry referred to the rescued people as “Bengalis”, which means they were Bangladeshi migrants.
