Migrant crisis: EU triples funding for rescue missions in Mediterranean
April 24 , 2015
The EU has decided to triple its funding for search and rescue missions in the Mediterranean after an emergency summit over the migrants’ issue in Brussels.
The EU is also looking at ways to target traffickers’ boats, and member states have pledged additional resources including boats.
The crisis talks were held after an estimated 800 migrants heading on boat to Europe died near the Libyan coast.
Donald Tusk, the European Council president, said that the EU would boost “co-operation against smuggling networks.”
