Michelle Bachelet wins Chile presidential election

  • Socialist Michelle Bachelet is back as Chile's president after winning 62.3 percent of the counted votes.

"I shall be a president for everyone in Chile," Bachelet said. She is expected to take over from Sebastian Pinera in March. Bachelet thanked her millions of supporters, who "demonstrated with their vote that they believe in me," she said.

Bachelet was the nation's first female president from 2006 to 2010. She promised in her victory speech to improve work for equality as well as education.

Presidents are not allowed to seek immediate re-election in Chile.
