Mexico Congress's Lower House Passes Bill to Carry Out Criminal Trial Against President in Office

  • Lower house of Mexico’s Congress has approved removal of politicians’ immunity from prosecution. Late on Thursday, members of Congress’s lower house voted in favor of carrying out criminal trial against the country’s president while in office. However, the move under the constitutional changes will only come in effect only after a vote in congress. The leftist Morena party’s congressman Jesús Álvarez López said that this bill will help in putting “an end to the impunity that prevails in Mexico’s political circles”. With Mexico readying up for presidential elections in July, every party is trying to take credit of this bill. The new bill is significant as the ruling Institutional Revolutionary party (PRI) is severely hit by allegations of corruption.
