Mauritania President Abdelaziz shot and injured

  • Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdelaziz was shot and wounded on Saturday, according to security sources.

He is currently being treated at a military hospital in the capital of Nouakchott, which has been sealed off by security forces.

The sources declined to provide any further details.

Mauritanian Communications Minister Hamdi Ould Mahjoub said the president was wounded after a military patrol accidentally opened fire on his convoy. He added his injuries were not serious.

Abdelaziz, 55, came to power in a military coup in 2008.

He won the presidential poll a year later held under an agreement with coup opponents.
