Massive protest in Chechnya over prophet Muhammad cartoons

  • An estimated 800,000 Chechens gathered in their capital Grozny on Monday, January 19, to protest the cartoons of the prophet Muhammad that were published by French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

    Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, who is backed by Russia, said European leaders were using “false slogans about free speech and democracy” to be “vulgar [and] “insult the religious feelings” of Muslims around the world.

    The crowd raised slogans against the West and in praise of Islam.
