Martin Schulz's Proposal of United States of Europe got few takers among German Conservatives

  • Leader of Germany’s Social Democrat Party (SPD) Martin Schulz called for a clear vision of Europe by forming a United States of Europe by the year 2025. However, senior members of the German conservative party (led by Chancellor Angela Merkel) rejected the vision of forming United States of Europe. While some conservative leaders called the proposal dangerous, others called the timeframe “unrealistic”. Popular newspaper polls found out that the idea of “United States of Europe” was rejected by 48 percent of the sample. Only 30 per cent Germans supported Schulz’s proposal.
