Mandela sign interpreter: I hallucinated during memorial service
December 13 , 2013
Nelson Mandela's interpreter, who was recently blasted for faking sign language during the memorial service said he wasn't making anything up. Instead, he was hallucinating on stage.
Thamsanqa Jantjie said the magnitude of the occasion led to him have an episode of schizophrenia. "There was nothing I could do," Jantjie said. "I was alone in a very dangerous situation. I tried to control myself and not show the world what was going on. I am very sorry, it's the situation I found myself in."
The interpreter was hired for the event for about $85 and the government plans on investigating the interpreting company.
"Anyone who doesn't understand this illness will think that I'm just making this up," Jantjie said.
