Maldives: Migrant workers threatened with expulsion over planned protest
March 27 , 2015
Immigrant workers in the Maldives have been warned that they would face expulsion from the country if they went ahead with a protest.
The planned protest has been organized after several recent attacks on workers, with two Bangladeshi men dying from their injuries.
Most of the immigrant workers are employed on the island nation’s luxury resorts, which cater to western tourists.
The economic ministry alleged that the protest was a “premeditated attempt to undermine” the country’s economy.
