Malaysia launches search and rescue mission for migrant boats
May 21 , 2015
Najib Razak, the Malaysian prime minister, has said that his country will launch search and rescue operations in the Andaman Sea for migrant boats.
He said aid would also be provided by sea and land.
The prime minister’s statements come after Malaysian authorities sent away several boats carrying Rohingya migrants that had approached the country’s shores in recent days.
Meanwhile, foreign ministers from Malaysia and Indonesia are holding talks with officials in Myanmar over the migrant crisis. Most of the migrants stranded at sea in the region are Myanmar’s Rohingya Muslims, who are fleeing persecution.
