Malaysia: Financial scandal triggers protest against prime minister
August 29 , 2015
Malaysian authorities are bracing themselves for protests in capital Kuala Lumpur and other cities against prime minister Najib Razak, who is facing a public backlash over a $700 million payment reportedly made to his bank account from foreign donors.
The protesters want Razak to step down.
An investigation into the mismanagement at 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), a state fund plagued by debt, led to the discovery of the controversial payment.
The prime minister has denied allegations of impropriety and wrongdoing.
