Malaysia: Boat carrying 28 Chinese tourists goes missing
January 29 , 2017
A boat carrying 31 people has gone missing from the coast of Borneo in Malaysia, the maritime authorities said. The boat carrying tourists including 28 from China, left Kota Kinabalu - the capital of Malaysia's eastern Sabah state, at about 9 am (0100 GMT) on Saturday for the Mengalum island, confirmed the officials.
However at about 9.50 pm, it was reported missing after it failed to arrive at the island. A search operation was soon launched, said the Sabah and Labuan Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) deputy director Rahim Ramli.
However, the search operation was hampered by the bad weather. The Malaysian navy and airforce were a part of search troop along with maritime police.
Meanwhile, the Chinese consulate in Kota Kinabalu has urged the state government to spur up the search effort. The China National Tourism Administration has initiated emergency response procedures.
